Taking a dog to the groomer can be stressful, but there are several ways to minimize anxiety and make the experience smoother for your Labrador, writes Bernadette Roberts.
Before the Grooming Appointment
Get Them Used to Handling – Regularly touch their paws, ears, and tail at home so they become comfortable with being handled.
Introduce Grooming Tools at Home – Let them hear the sound of clippers, feel a brush, or see scissors to reduce fear of unfamiliar tools.
Take Them for a Visit First – If possible, visit the groomer before the actual appointment. Let them meet the groomer, explore the space, and get familiar with the smells.
Tire Them Out – Take them for a walk or play a game before the appointment to release extra energy. A tired dog is usually calmer.
Use Calming Aids if Needed – Try natural remedies like calming chews, or a Thundershirt to help them relax.
On the Day of the Appointment
Stay Calm & Positive – Dogs pick up on your energy. If you’re anxious, they will be too! Stay cheerful and act like it’s a fun adventure.
Bring Comfort Items – A favourite toy, blanket, or even a T-shirt that smells like you can help soothe them.
Use a Secure, Comfortable Leash & Harness – A well-fitted harness can help them feel safe.
Keep the Car Ride Relaxed – Play calming music and avoid rushing. If your dog gets anxious in the car, try covering their crate with a blanket or using a seat belt harness for security.
Arrive Early (But Not Too Early) – Giving them a few minutes to adjust is great, but waiting too long can build anxiety.
During & After Grooming
Choose the Right Groomer – Find a patient, experienced groomer who knows how to handle anxious dogs. Some groomers even offer “fear-free” or one-on-one appointments.
Ask for Shorter Sessions – If your dog is very anxious, ask if the groomer can split sessions (e.g., brushing one day, nails another).
Use Positive Reinforcement – Have treats ready when you pick them up and praise them for being brave!
Stay Consistent – Regular grooming visits (every 4–6 weeks) help them get used to it over time.
Extra Tip:
Try a Mobile Groomer – If the salon environment is overwhelming, a mobile groomer who comes to your home can be a less stressful alternative.
