Tips to Make Grooming Easier

particularly if your Labrador isn’t a fan

Make It a Positive Experience

Use Treats & Praise – Reward your Lab with treats and praise before, during, and after grooming. This helps build a positive association.
Start Slow – If your dog is nervous, introduce grooming tools gradually. Let them sniff the brush or nail clippers before using them.
Short Sessions – Keep grooming sessions short at first (5 – 10 minutes) and increase the time as they get comfortable.

Brush Regularly (But gently!)

Use the Right Brush – A rubber curry brush or slicker brush works well for Labs. Avoid brushing too hard to prevent irritation.
Brush in the Direction of Hair Growth – This makes the process more comfortable and effective.
Do It When They’re Calm – After a walk or playtime is a great time since they’ll be more relaxed.

Bathing Tips

Use Lukewarm Water – Too hot or too cold can make bath time unpleasant.
Massage Shampoo Gently – Labs love a good rub! Use a bath brush to work the shampoo into their coat.
Dry Them Well – Use a microfiber towel or a dog dryer on low heat to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to skin infections.

Nail Trimming Without Stress

Get Them Used to Paw Handling – Touch their paws regularly, even when you’re not trimming their nails, so they get used to it.
Trim After Exercise – Tired dogs are more likely to stay still!
Use a Grinder if Clippers Scare Them – A nail grinder is quieter and smoother, which some dogs prefer.

Ear Cleaning & Teeth Brushing

Use a Soft Touch – Labs’ ears are sensitive, so gently wipe inside the ear without going too deep.
Flavoured Dog Toothpaste – Many dogs love chicken- or peanut butter-flavoured toothpaste, making brushing easier.

Make It Routine

Same Time, Same Place – Labs thrive on routine. Grooming at the same time and place helps them know what to expect.
End on a High Note – Always finish with a treat, belly rub, or playtime so they associate grooming with something fun!
