Labrador & Retriever Puppy Grooming Schedule (First Year)

Starting a schedule early helps your puppy develop positive associations with grooming

Check out this month-by-month guide to keep your pup happy and healthy and well-groomed.

8–12 Weeks (Getting Started)

Brushing (Daily or Every Other Day)

Use a soft puppy brush or rubber curry brush to remove loose hair and massage the skin.

Keep sessions short and fun (2–5 minutes).

Paw Handling & Nail Trimming (Weekly)

Gently touch and hold paws daily to desensitize them.

Use puppy nail clippers or a grinder to trim sharp tips (even if it’s just one nail at a time!).

Ear Cleaning (Check Weekly, Clean if Needed)

Wipe ears gently with a damp cloth or vet-approved ear cleaner.

Tooth Brushing (2–3 Times Per Week)

Use a puppy toothbrush and dog-safe toothpaste.

Let them lick the toothpaste first to get used to the taste.

Bathing (Only if Necessary)

Avoid frequent baths; if needed, use a mild puppy shampoo and lukewarm water.

Keep the bath quick and use treats to make it a positive experience.

3–6 Months (Building Routine)

Brushing (3–4 Times Per Week)

Increase brushing time to 5–10 minutes as their coat starts shedding more.

Nail Trimming (Every 2 Weeks)

If nails click on the floor, they’re too long!

Ear Cleaning (Every 2 Weeks, or if Dirty/Wet)

Labradors are prone to ear infections, so check regularly.

Tooth Brushing (At Least 3 Times a Week, Daily is Best!)

Introduce dental chews as a fun addition.

Bathing (Once Every 4–6 Weeks or When Dirty)

Labradors have natural oils that keep their coat healthy—don’t over-bathe!

Introduce a Blow Dryer (Low Heat, Low Speed)

Get them used to the noise so they aren’t afraid later.

6–12 Months (Consistent Routine)

Brushing (Every Other Day)

Helps control seasonal shedding (Labs blow their coat twice a year).

Nail Trimming (Every 2–3 Weeks)

Longer nails can cause discomfort and affect walking posture.

Ear Cleaning (Every 2 Weeks)

Especially important if your dog swims or plays in water.

Tooth Brushing (Every Day if Possible!)

Reduces risk of dental disease.

Bathing (Every 6–8 Weeks or When Needed)

Use a de-shedding shampoo during heavy shedding seasons.

Introduce Professional Grooming (If Needed)

Labs don’t need haircuts, but professional de-shedding treatments can help manage shedding.

Bonus Tips for a Calm & Happy Grooming Experience

  • Use treats and praise! Always reward good behaviour during grooming.
  • Stay calm and relaxed. Your puppy will pick up on your emotions.
  • Keep sessions short and positive. End before they get frustrated.
  • Try a grooming mat or towel. It helps signal “grooming time” when placed on the floor.
