Labrador Retrievers should be groomed at least once a week, but during shedding seasons (spring and autumn), brushing two to three times a week is ideal. Bathing should be done every four to six weeks or as needed if they get particularly dirty. Regular grooming is important for several reasons:
Controls Shedding – Labradors have a double coat that sheds year-round, with heavy shedding in spring and autumn. Brushing removes loose hair and reduces fur buildup in your home.
Maintains Coat and Skin Health – Brushing distributes natural oils, keeping the coat shiny and healthy while preventing dryness and irritation.
Prevents Mats and Tangles – Even though Labs have short hair, their thick undercoat can develop mats if not brushed regularly, especially in wet conditions.
Reduces Allergens and Dirt – Labs love the outdoors and water, which means they pick up dirt, pollen, and allergens. Regular grooming helps keep them clean and comfortable.
Helps Spot Health Issues – Grooming sessions allow you to check for lumps, cuts, parasites, or skin infections early.
Keeps Nails and Ears in Check – Regular nail trimming prevents painful cracking or posture issues, and cleaning their ears helps prevent infections, especially since Labs are prone to ear problems.
