When Not to Groom Your Dog

It’s best to get your Labrador checked out by the vet

There are certain health issues in Labradors and Retrievers that require extra caution before grooming. If your dog has any of the following conditions, it’s best to consult a vet before proceeding as grooming your dog could create more problems or irritate existing ones.

Skin Infections or Hot Spots

Symptoms: Red, inflamed, moist, or oozing skin (often from excessive licking or scratching).

Why Avoid Grooming? Bathing or brushing could further irritate the area, making it worse.

Talk to your vet. They may recommend medicated shampoos or topical treatments.

Ear Infections

Symptoms: Excessive head shaking, redness, foul smell, or dark discharge in the ears.

Why Avoid Grooming? Water or cleaning solutions could worsen the infection.

A vet will prescribe an ear cleaner or medication before you resume normal cleaning.

Skin Allergies (Atopic Dermatitis)

Symptoms: Itchy skin, hair loss, redness, or rashes – often due to food or environmental allergies.

Why Avoid Grooming? Regular shampoos may irritate the skin; brushing could cause discomfort.

Your vet might recommend a hypoallergenic shampoo or allergy medication.

Hip & Elbow Dysplasia (Joint Pain)

Symptoms: Limping, difficulty standing, stiffness, or pain when moving.

Why Avoid Grooming? Lifting or positioning them awkwardly could cause pain.

If they have arthritis or joint issues, use a non-slip grooming mat and avoid excessive pressure. In the first instance, seek advice from your vet.

Open Wounds, Cuts, or Tumours

Symptoms: Any fresh cuts, lumps, or unusual growths.

Why Avoid Grooming? Brushing or bathing could cause irritation or infection.

If you notice any new lumps, have them checked before continuing regular grooming.

Fleas, Ticks, or Mites

Symptoms: Constant scratching, flea dirt (black specks in fur), or visible parasites.

Why Avoid Grooming? Bathing might spread fleas, and brushing can worsen irritated skin.

Use a vet-approved flea treatment or a high standard holistic solution before grooming.

Recent Surgery or Medical Treatments

Symptoms: Stitches, shaved areas, healing wounds.

Why Avoid Grooming? Brushing or bathing too soon can disrupt healing.

Wait for the vet’s approval before resuming full grooming.
