Barbie The Lurcher To Enjoy Her First Safe Christmas as Cheltenham Animal Shelter Launches Urgent Festive Appeal

Barbie the lurcher will spend this Christmas safe, warm and loved, a world away from the frightened stray who arrived at Cheltenham Animal Shelter earlier this year after fending for herself for months.
The young dog, now the face of the charity’s Light Up Their Lives Appeal, has become the ambassador for animals still waiting for their own happy ending. Staff say her transformation embodies exactly why public support is so desperately needed.
When Barbie first arrived, she was painfully thin, nervous and unsure of everything around her. She barely dared to lift her head as she tried to understand a world that had given her very little kindness.

“She didn’t know how to play, she flinched at sudden movements, and all she really wanted was to feel safe,” said Nicky Merifield, of the shelter.
They began gently: quiet walks, soft reassurance, and scent-work games that allowed her to explore at her own pace. Slowly, Barbie’s confidence began to bloom. She found joy in toys, discovered she loved learning new things, and even developed a deep attachment to a stuffed toy dog that rarely leaves her side.
Now, the once-terrified stray is a whirlwind of happiness, quite literally. Barbie gets so excited around other dogs that she spins in circles “like a happy tornado,” said Nicky. It’s charming, if a little overwhelming for more reserved canines, but with ongoing training and patience, the team is confident she’ll soon learn to share her enthusiasm more calmly.

Barbie’s recovery is thanks to months of dedicated behavioural work, the very support Cheltenham Animal Shelter hopes to provide to many more animals this winter. The charity is appealing to the public to donate to its Christmas campaign, helping to fund the specialist care that traumatised animals like Barbie depend on.
Cheltenham Animal Shelter is also part of the newly launched Pet Remedy Rescue Map, a pioneering UK-wide scheme helping would-be adopters find ethical, welfare-led rescue centres. The map was created in response to growing concerns about unethical operators and directs families only to shelters that can demonstrate the very highest standards of care. For Barbie, that trustworthy environment made all the difference.
Nicky added: “Barbie has come such a long way because people believed in her and gave us the resources to help her heal. Every donation to our Christmas appeal helps another dog take those steps towards feeling safe again.”
As the festive season approaches, Barbie’s story stands as a reminder that behind every wagging tail is a second chance made possible by kindness.
And while she still has more to learn, this Christmas one thing is certain, Barbie will celebrate it in the loving care she always deserved.
